Is it normal to have a light gas smell?

I use propane gas to heat and to cook. Lately when I walk by my furnace I think I smell gas? I asked my fiance he said it's not gas and then I ask my mom she said I should have it checked out. Well is it normal to have that smell? I have never noticed it before.
