Why does the U.S. aid fascist dictatorships (especially under Reagan) and then claim it stands for democracy?

here are just a few examples: the Shah, Saddam, Ayub Khan, Yahya Khan, Musharraf, Suharto, Osama Bin Laden, King Abdullah of Jordan, Pinochet, Montt, Batista, etc.
