In DC, there are literally hundreds of statues dedicated to heroes throughout the city...?

American and international heroes. This practice has almost stopped in the last two or three generations. I am not talking about the monuments on the mall, but the statutues to lessor known heroes that were enshrined with pride. Have we grown up as a people, or, are we to cynical a people to admire others, instead, of ourselves? What say you?
